Behind the Scenes at Short Talks

Marketing is no longer about the stuff you make but about the stories you tell
— Seth Godin

So you've heard about our Short Talks Events but do you want to know what it's like to actually go and shoot a video at one of them?

We created this blog to take you behind the scenes and describe what happens during your Short Talks timeslot.

Arriving

Before the shoot, you’ll have received all of the details of how to plan, tips about what you could bring and information about where to go so that you can turn up fully prepared and feeling confident. We’ll be sure to give you a warm welcome when you arrive and make you feel at ease. You might be thinking that it’ll be a rush - how can you film everything you want to say in your hour timeslot? We can assure you from experience, you’ll have plenty of time to film your script several times over.

Our equipment will already be set up ready for when you arrive. Don’t be put off though, they don’t bite. Our first aim is to help you feel relaxed so that you can be calm and at your best in front of the camera.

Preparing

Before we start filming we’ll have a practice run or two in front of the camera to get you used to having all eyes on you. We'll go over your script and understand the key messages you want to get across to your audience. This is where your planning before the filming date really comes in handy. If you’ve prepared a clear, concise script which tells a story, then you’ll already know what you want to say and the structure of how to say it.

Filming

Now that you’ve had a practice, you’re feeling confident, you’ve remembered what you want to say, you’re feeling ready to go. We press record and you tell your story. We can take the pressure off by asking you questions to prompt you and by giving tips along the way to help you perform your best.

Remember to speak clearly and not to rush. This is your time to shine, represent yourself and your business. We’ll get plenty of footage of reruns so don’t worry if you mess up. The key is to relax. It usually takes a few tries to feel like you’ve really got it right.

So you’ve said your piece, you might think that’s it. Not just yet. We’ll most likely want to shoot some B roll of you so we might ask to film you walking into the room and sitting down, browsing through your website on a laptop, stuff like that. Or maybe you’ve brought in some of your products, business cards or other props that represent your business, brand or story. Perhaps you’ve brought in clients to provide testimonials or case studies. Or you might have brought in some pre-existing footage you want us to incorporate into your video (if the footage isn't great though, we can only work with what we've got). Whatever or whoever you’ve brought with you, we’ll get the footage we need.

If you’ve also purchased our headshots add-on we’ll take these shots at the end.

After the Shoot

Once we’ve done this we’ll have all the footage we need to create your video. We’ll go over the final details with you and answer any questions and this will be the end of your Short Talks session.

You can leave with the excitement of knowing that the filming day is over, you’ve got the hard part out of the way, and now you can sit back while we edit our hearts out and get a first edit to you within 10 working days.

The Launch of Short Talks

We launched ManMade Short Talks back at the end of April at the 5* Forbury Roseate Hotel in Reading. We were amazed at the range of businesses it drew in, from a marketing consultancy to a personal stylist, a VR software designer to the creator of Blossoms Syrups and more.

Our second Short Talks event took place at one of the stunning apartments at House of Fisher in Reading and again we got variety, learning more about innovative smart technology, better giving within the charity sector, the cullanans club and insomnia therapies. All in all two fun days full of interesting people that flew by for us.
